Instantly recognisable by the dimpling pattern it causes on the skin, cellulite it caused cause by lobules of underlying adipose tissue. Cellulite is not a medical or scientific term but refers only to aesthetics The term cellulite originated in France and began appearing in English language publications in the late 1960s. Descriptive names for cellulite include orange peel syndrome, cottage cheese skin, the mattress phenomenon, and hail damage.Scientists have suggested that the reason cellulite affects women more than men, is because the adipose tissue lies more closely to the skin in women than it does in men.
Occuring mostly on the thighs, buttocks and hips, it is a general misconception that cellultite is related to being over weight, as average and underweight people also get cellulite. It has therefore been suggested that cellulite may be caused by genetics.
While harmless, the dimpled appearance of cellulite has come to be viewed as unattractive and undesirable. And as dieting does not get rid of the dimpled appearance, the cosmetics industry have made millions by offering people self concious of their cellulite possible remedies. It has been suggested that balanced eating, drinking and exercising may help.
