Tanning – June 2015

Tanning treatments are one of the staple salon treatments. The most popular tanning treatments are Spray Tans, which are offered by 37% of all UK salons businesses, followed by Manual Tan applications which are available from 13% of UK salon businesses. UV Tanning is only available in 3% of UK salon businesses. – source UK Salon Treatments and Prices survey December 2014.

 

Survey Methodology

The Beauty Industry Survey for Tanning was carried out through Beautyguild.com which is the website of the Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists and is the UK’s largest professional beauty website. The tanning questionnaire was available from 7/5/15 to 1/6/15. A total of 232 unique visitors (212 in 2014) responded to the specific questionnaire on tanning treatments and brands.

How Many Tanning Treatments Are Carried Out In The UK?

We asked therapists and salon owners to tell us how many tanning treatments they carried out each week. The average number of treatments carried out each week and each year are shown in the full report.

 

Where Do Therapists Train In Tanning Treatments?

Most of the large tanning brands offer training courses. Indeed, many of these offer “free” training as part of a starter package that usually includes a spray tanning tent or cubicle, spray gun, solution and accessories. A table of the most popular training brands and locations is provided in the full report.

 

Why Choose A Particular Training School?

The question regarding where people trained in tanning was followed up with a question that asked them why they had trained there. Six different options were provided and respondents could tick any or all of the options. The different options and the scores they achieved are shown in a table in the full report.

 

What Brand Were Therapists Trained With?

The training location question was backed up with a question which asked therapists which brand they were trained on. The list of brands mentioned in alphabetical order is shown below.

Brand Loyalty

How many business owners still use the brand they were trained with? Once trained how to carry out spray tan treatments, it is relatively easy to switch to a different brand. Indeed, most of the large brands offer conversion courses that are specifically designed to make it easy for therapists to switch from the brand they were trained in. We asked the question “Do you still use the same brand you were trained in?” The results for the top five brands are shown in a table in the full report.

 

Which Brands Are Therapists Switching To?

A follow up question to the one about brand loyalty asked those business owners who had switched brands, which brands they had switched to. The results are shown in a table in the full report.

 

Training Course Costs

We asked therapists how much they had paid to attend a training course. The average cost is shown in the full report along with a scatter chart showing the distribution of results.

 

Training Course Length

Most spray tan training courses are completed in a day. Some courses include theory which is completed online before the student attends the practical training session. We asked therapists to tell us how many hours of training they had undertaken. The average course length is shown in the full report.

 

Distance Travelled To Attend Training

We asked therapists to tell us how far they had travelled to do their training. The average distance travelled is shown in the full report along with a scatter chart which shows the distribution of results.

 

Ordering and Re-ordering Stock

We asked therapists to tell us how they ordered and re-ordered their tanning products. They had five options to choose from, and the options and results are shown in a table in the full report.

 

Why Choose A Particular Tanning Brand?

A new question was introduced for the 2015 survey which asked our sample to tell us why they chose the brand they did. A number of different options were provided and our sample could choose any or all that applied. The table of options and scores are shown in the full report.

 

Associated Retail Sales

Another new question for 2015 asked what additional retail products were sold in association with tanning treatments. We provided a list of options. The table of options and the scores they achieved are shown in a table in the full report.

 

Why Clients Book Tanning Treatments

A new question for the 2015 survey examined why clients booked salon tanning treatments. We offered our sample of therapists and salon owners four of the most popular reasons and asked them to pick the most popular reason. The options and results are shown in a table in the full report.

 

Most Popular Look

Another new question for 2015 asked what clients asked for most in terms of the look they wanted to achieve from their tanning treatment. We gave three options and the results for these options are shown in a table in the full report.

 

Why Are Tanning Treatments Popular

Also new for 2015 was a question which asked salon owners about the attitudes of their clients towards the recent upswing in popularity of spray tanning treatments. We asked the question, “Fake tanning treatments have increased in popularity in recent years. Why do you think this is?” Our sample of salon owners and therapists were offered four options for which they could select all or any. The options and the popularity of them are shown in a table in the full report.

 

Men and Tanning

New for the 2015 survey were three questions that investigated attitudes towards tanning treatments for men and male spray tanners.
We asked how many of our salons offered tanning treatments to men. Of those salon that did offer male tanning treatments, we asked how many of them had seen an increase in the number of male clients booking tanning treatments in the last 12 months. We then asked how many of our salons had male spray tan professionals providing treatments. Finally, we asked our sample if they thought female clients would be comfortable having a spray tan performed by male beauty professionals.
